The MSO teams up with acclaimed soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek to bring you Act 1 from the second opera of Wagner’s famous Ring Cycle.
This special evening begins with Wagner’s blissful love song to his wife, the Siegfried Idyll. Composed as a birthday present to Cosima after the birth of their son Siegfried, the symphonic poem is an encapsulation of Wagner’s ability to be both grand and intimate at the same time.
The Idyll then gives way to Act I of Die Walküre, the second opera in Wagner’s Ring Cycle. The acclaimed Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek, a noted Sieglinde who has appeared in the role to acclaim in the world’s greatest houses, appears alongside Dutch tenor Frank van Aken as her brother and lover Siegmund. Australian bass Daniel Sumegi is her boorish husband Hunding.
Witness the superb Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis in action as they bring you this potent story of love, family and identity.
A hunted man shelters from the storm, not knowing he has entered the house of his enemy. Ancient custom keeps him safe for the night, but the morning will bring death – until forbidden love turns winter to spring.
