MELBOURNE OPERA

THE FLYING DUTCHMAN – 3, 5, 7 FEBRUARY 2019

At the Regent Theatre Melbourne. Conducted by Anthony Negus, with the Melbourne Opera Orchestra. VICTORIAN OPERA

PARSIFAL – 20, 22, 24 FEBRUARY 2019

At the Palais Theatre, St Kilda, Melbourne. Conducted by Richard Mills, with stage direction by Roger Hodgman and designs by Richard Roberts. The Australian Youth Orchestra – this country’s finest young musicians on the cusp of professional orchestral careers – will complete the artistic forces on this special occasion. This sublime final work of Richard Wagner (he called it his crowning achievement) has only been fully staged once before in Australia, in Adelaide in 2001.

The cast is impressive.

▄  Parsifal – Burkhard Fritz.  Earlier this month he sang Siegfried at the Lyric Opera of Chicago conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, and in 2019 will sing Walther von Stolzing at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, and Parsifal at the Bavarian State Opera, conducted by Kirill Petrenko. In the past he has sung Tannhäuser in Berlin (with Simone Young), Lohengrin in Vienna and Siegmund in Leipzig, among other roles.  

   Kundry – Katarina Dalayman.  Celebrated Swedish soprano, she has performed Kundry in Dresden, Paris and Stockholm and at The Metropolitan Opera, New York opposite Kaufmann and Pape, conducted by Daniele Gatti. Well known for her performances as Brünnhilde at The Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, Salzburger Festspiele and Festival d’Aix en Provence.  

  Gurnemanz – Peter Rose. British bass Peter Rose has sung Gurnemanz at the Vienna State Opera, Hamburg State Opera and Graz Opera, and Daland at the Bayreuth Festival (2016 and 2018), the Bavarian State Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin, and the Vienna State Opera. Other major roles have included King Marke, Baron Ochs (repeatedly at Vienna) and Osmin. He is a prolific concert artist, and has sung under conductors Daniel Barenboim, Carlo Maria Giulini, Carlos Kleiber, Lorin Maazel and Simon Rattle, with the world’s leading orchestras.

▄  Amfortas – James Roser. Australian-born James Roser has sung Beckmesser, Gunther, Wotan (Das Rheingold) and Wolfram at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl and has also sung at the Vienna State Opera. 

▄  Klingsor – Derek Welton. Australian bass-baritone Derek Welton has sung Klingsor at the Bayreuth Festival (2017 and 2018) to outstanding reviews, Bavarian State Opera under Kirill Petrenko and in Beijing; Wotan (Das Rheingold) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, under Sir Donald Runnicles, and the Herald (Lohengrin) at the Semperoper Dresden under Christian Thielemann.

Thursday 21 Feb – 6.15pm for 6.30pm   After the talk, join us for wine and cheese with our guest speaker.

Saturday 23 Feb – 10.0am Morning tea on arrival, with the talk commencing at 10.30am.
