It is difficult to imagine the effect that the early Bayreuth Festivals had on those who attended them.

Nearly all of the great composers of the day went there (Puccini made the pilgrimage on three separate occasions and was besotted with Parsifal).

Many of Wagner’s revolutionary ideas influenced and shaped what we now take for granted, and so the challenge for Wagner’s descendants has been to find ways to leave their own distinctive marks.

There have been some brilliant and moving stagings on ‘the green hill’, but there have also been some shockers.

Join us for a taste of what Bayreuth has had to offer in recent decades and share your judgments and opinions. It promises to be an enjoyable and enlightening afternoon.
