The Wagner Society in Queensland is committed to supporting all Wagner-related activities and productions in Australia and especially Queensland.

In 2017, our Society became a registered charity under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Although we rank as a small charity (annual revenue less than $500,000), we are still subject to a range of Commonwealth regulations and guidelines overseen by the ACNC, and we provide annual reports of income and expenditure for charitable purposes.

Donations by members are made to The Wagner Society in Queensland’s Public Donations Fund – a tax-deductible fund listed on the Australian Government’s Register of Cultural Organisations, set up under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. Receipts bearing this information are issued to donors at the time of their gifts. The accumulated funds are then disbursed by the Management Committee to various beneficiaries, including to opera companies staging Wagner’s works, facilitating not only finished performances but also the engagement of singers and production staff, dramaturgy, designs, scenery building, costume making, publicity and marketing, rehearsals, and other expensive preparatory activities usually spread over several years. Among the advantages of being a registered charity is our entitlement to discounts for various services, and there are taxation benefits flowing to donors and supporters.

Members are most welcome to make donations by bank transfer to our Donations Account:

The Wagner Society in Queensland Inc. Encouragement Award

This Award has been given for many years, and it involves a cash prize of $1,000. The prize is offered on an annual basis, and those eligible are current tertiary students who, through performance in a major or minor role in a Conservatorium Opera production, best demonstrate vocal potential for a future career in large scale romantic operas in the style of Richard Wagner or Richard Strauss. In some years there may be no candidate satisfying the criteria, in which case, the Encouragement Award is not awarded. The adjudicators are Heads of the Vocal and Opera Departments and all producers of opera programs during the year, and the Award will be determined during the end-of-year examination period. The Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University is responsible for the administration of the Award and the managing of associated funds. The Secretary of the Wagner Society in Queensland Inc. is advised as soon as possible after the Award winner has been chosen, usually at the end of the relevant year. Members will be informed of the recipient of the Award soon afterwards.

The Society greatly appreciates all donations by members and, in particular in recent years by Timothy & Mary Rose Cooney; John Casey; Kathleen Clifford; Frank & Ailbhe Cunningham; Mark Walker; Colin Mackerras; Peter & Carol Bassett; Susan Treloar; Sheena Burnell; Terry & Moira Gabbedy, and Judy Xavier.
