On the 15th and 17th November 2024, the SSO presented two performances of Die Walküre conducted by Simone Young. A small group attended from the Queensland Society and the consensus was that it was one of the most outstanding performances experienced. The singers, without exception, were fantastic, and the performance in concert allowed the interaction of the characters and the story to flow through to the audience without the distraction that sometimes comes from a staged performance. The deep knowledge of the score allowed singers to interact with each other in a manner that gave life and immediacy to the story. The orchestra, of course, under the baton of Simone Young excelled. The Wagner tubas, the harps, the brass and each of the other sections came alive and gave a performance that was totally thrilling. In fact, I can’t find anything to criticise and can only say that it was a performance not to be forgotten!
Between the performances, the NSW Wagner Society held a Reception at Customs House that was well attended by both NSW Wagnerians and those from other States. It was a very pleasant way to catch up and meet other people, several of whom had attended the Receptions hosted by our Society last year.
