Parsifal: What does it all mean?
Dr Stephen
Emmerson

Parsifal is arguably the most enigmatic and controversial of Wagner’s works. In this presentation Stephen Emmerson will discuss various interpretations of its underlying meaning. Extending beyond what the composer may have intended, the presentation will consider how its meaning has been (re)interpreted through a range of performances and productions.

Stephen’s talk will include many keyboard illustrations.

Stephen Emmerson has been on full-time staff at the Queensland Conservatorium since ‘way back in the last century’. He studied piano at The University of Queensland with Pamela Page and later with Peter Wallfisch in London.  He later attained Masters and Doctoral degrees from Oxford University.

In addition to his teaching at the Conservatorium, he maintains a busy career as pianist and chamber musician having performed widely in concerts and festivals around Australia, New Zealand, UK, Asia and the Pacific.  He has adored the music of Wagner since his teenage years – indeed his fascination with it has only grown over the years.
