Wagner’s Choral Music and Opera Choruses
Presented by Graham Bruce
While the choruses of Wagner’s operas are well known, his non-operatic music is seldom heard. This session will explore Wagner’s early attempts in Dresden at works for small and large choirs, including his tribute, At Weber’s Grave: Lift up your voices, for the burial of Carl Maria von Weber’s ashes at his Dresden home after their return from London, and the impressive Love Feast of the Apostles first performed in the Dresden Frauenkirche. It will also include some of his great operatic choruses and ensembles and explore the problems of directing large choruses on stage. The afternoon will provide a feast of choral excerpts from recent and classic recordings.
