This talk deals with German opera of the period leading up to, during and just after World War I. Examples will include Hans Pfitzner’s Palestrina, Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and Alban Berg’s Wozzeck. The talk illustrates differing reactions to the influence of Wagner and the society of the period, including the new atonal style of music. It will include many musical examples and illustrations.
