The Prelude to Tristan has long been admired as one Wagner's most remarkable musical achievements. Michael Tanner (1997) has referred to it as "Wagner’s most renowned contribution to the history of music." In fact he goes further to claim that it "is something more than that. It is a contribution to the history of the Western mind, quite apart from music."
