DIRECTOR: Keith Warner

When the Ring, directed by Keith Warner for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, was first created, opera by opera over two years, the first opera, Das Rheingold, was filmed for television in 2004. It is this TV screening which we will see following the 2016 AGM. The complete cycle was not seen at the Royal Opera until 2007 but was never filmed or issued on commercial DVD.

Das Rheingold was Bryn Terfel’s first attempt at Wotan and it’s a very detailed, finely acted performance. So too is that of the Alberich played by Gunther van Kanen, and Fricka interpreted by Rosalind  Plowright. However, you may well decide that it is the mischievous performance of Loge by Phillip Langridge which dominates the stage as he relishes the depleted strength of the gods. In Keith Warner’s production, Nibelheim is portrayed in the manner of a horror film. Alberich enhances the power of the ring by conducting, with Mime’s contrivance, grizzly operations on the bodies of the Nibelungs so that they become zombie-like figures forced to mine from the earth the gold which adds to Alberich’s power. Unlike most Ring productions, we here actually see the creation of the ring by Alberich.
