In 2009 Peter Bassett was consultant for the State Opera of South Australia’s production of Der fliegende Holländer conducted by Nicholas Braithwaite and featuring John Wegner as the Dutchman, Margaret Medlyn as Senta, Stuart Skelton as Erik, and Daniel Sumegi as Daland. He compiled the program and wrote essays (‘Wagner Finds his Voice’ and ‘The Legend of the Flying Dutchman’) for the SOSA production, and, in 2013 wrote a program article ‘The Power of Love’ for New Zealand Opera’s Flying Dutchman. In 2015 he wrote an article on the Dutchman for Limelight Magazine and, in the same year, contributed a program article for Victorian Opera’s production featuring our Patron Bradley Daley as Erik, Warwick Fyfe as Daland and Liane Keegan as Mary. In 2016 he gave a pre-performance talk for Seattle Opera’s Flying Dutchman featuring Greer Grimsley as the Dutchman and Daniel Sumegi as Daland. He has led opera tours to performances of the Dutchman in Berlin in 2002 (where a young Stuart Skelton sang Erik, following which Peter recommended him for the role of Siegmund in the 2004 Adelaide Ring and Erik in the 2009 Adelaide Dutchman), Savonlinna, Auckland, Melbourne and Seattle.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra will perform the Overture to Der fliegende Holländer in concerts conducted by Umberto Clerici at QPAC on 15th and 16th November. See ‘Wagner in Brisbane’ page of this website.
