This presentation will explore that claim by a close examination of its musical language, considering both the famous “Tristan Chord” at the start and the prelude’s overall form. Its relationship to the rest of the opera and the Liebestod in particular will also be discussed. As the score extracts will be examined, the ability to read musical notation will be an advantage though not essential.

stephen-emmersonDr Stephen Emmerson has been on full-time staff at the Queensland Conservatorium since (as he describes it) way back in the last century. He studied piano at the University of Queensland with Pamela Page and later with Peter Wallfisch in London.  He has Masters and Doctoral degrees from Oxford University. He maintains a busy career as pianist and chamber musician having performed widely in concerts and festivals around Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific.  He has adored the music of Wagner since his teenage years – indeed his fascination with it has only grown over the years.
